KENNER, La. (WGNO) – New Mount Bethel Baptist Church in Kenner took some damage Tuesday. Tornado-like winds blew off the church’s brick facade.

The couple who lives across the street told WGNO’s Meghan Kluth they’re lucky to be alive.

“As I was running I heard this loud crumble, and I looked over and that was the church just crumbling off. You can hear it. And the neighbor was all coming out. He’s the one who notified all the pastors and all of them. Again I just said ‘thank ya Jesus,” said Lilie Mae Howard.

Lilie and her husband were driving when the strong winds lifted their truck off the road.

The New Mount Bethel Church wasn’t the only building which was damaged.  A home in the 500 block of Centanni Road and another in the 500 block of Salvadore Lane had roof and porch damage.

A large tree was also blown down in the 700 block of Pollock Road.
