The threat of pending legislation in the Louisiana House of Representatives has at least some members of the LHSAA re-thinking its split playoffs.
Mike Boyer, Principal of Teurlings Catholic and the chairman of the school relations committee said his committee has a real concern.
“We want to stave off government intervention,” said Boyer.
The LHSAA’s Executive Committee is scheduled to meet Thursday. Boyer said the school relations committee will have recommendations, but he wouldn’t say exactly what they would be.
Expected to be in attendance at Thursday’s meeting is State Representative Kirk Talbot R-River Ridge. Talbot has authored two House bills aimed at ending the split. One, House bill 863 passed the Education Committee by a vote of 7-5.
The LHSAA asked Talbot to “hold” his legislation until after the meeting, Thursday.
“We have a worst case scenario,” said Boyer. “That is state government taking over the LHSAA.”
A majority of LHSAA Principals vote in January of 2013 to split the football playoffs into public and private. In January of 2016, a majority of Principals voted to add baseball, basketball, and softball to the split playoffs for the 2016-2017 school year.
