NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The St. Paul Wolves will take on the Jesuit Blue Jays Friday night at Tad Gormley Stadium.
St. Paul had an excellent season opener against Karr, 34-7. The Wolves’ Coach Ken Sears said preparation was key to the win.
“I thought they prepared well during the week. As the week went on, we practiced a little bit better each week. I knew by Friday, we would play well. I didn’t know what the outcome would be but win or lose, I thought they would give great effort for us on Friday,” said Coach Sears.
The Wolves return seven starters on offense and defense. Sears is impressed with his leaders, including his son Kenny Sears. The quarterback has committed to Northwestern State.
“It’s been a great senior class. From 9th grade on up, they’ve really stuck close together. They’re very unselfish. Even though the season is early, they provide a great leadership, so far. I’m real pleased with what they’ve done so far. I think they have a lot of potential as a class. They have a lot of potential to help our team get through a very tough, challenging season,” said Coach Sears.
A challenge in week 2 of the regular season will be against the Blue Jays. The defending state champions lost to Warren Easton last week, 26-21.
“I think we need to work on the things we didn’t do so well last week in the game, and try to improve on that. I think we need to take care of the ball a little bit better. I think Jesuit is one of those teams that are very disciplined, very well coached. Their staff does a great job, so you can’t really make too many mistakes against them because they will exploit them. They have a very big offensive line. Their defense flies around. So we’re going to have to be focused and try to minimize our mistakes, and try to have an opportunity to win,” said Coach Sears.
Last season, St. Paul finished with a record of 7-4. They lost in the first round of the Division I playoffs.
Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.
Highlights of Friday night’s game is on Friday Night Football presented by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. It is live on Nola 38 at 11 p.m. Replay at midnight on WGNO.
