HAMMOND, La. (WGNO) — A lot has changed in just two weeks for former Destrehan quarterback Donovan Isom.

“I feel like I’ve been getting comfortable with the offense. I’m picking up things really fast. Faster than I expected,” said Isom.
He spent his first college season at Utah. The transfer understands he will have a few struggles down the road in his new home at Southeastern Louisiana. But, he’s ready to make his mark on the team.
“I got a very strong arm, I feel like I can moveĀ around in the pocket. Being in Utah for a year, I got fasterĀ and more athletic as a quarterback,” he said.
Isom said coming back to his home state and just 45 minutes away from his hometown was an easy choice. He’s very close with his family. Even more so after they lost everything in a house fire in June.

“It was pretty hard. I took it very hard. I just thank God my mom, grandma, my grandpa, my sister made it out alive. That’s the biggest thing, I’m happy for us,” he said.

He’s also happy his family will get to watch him play. Yet, Lions Coach Ron Roberts said D’Shaie Landor is playing lights out and will be the starting quarterback. They have depth at the position.

“Those other guys are growing fast and doing a heck of a job but, it is what it is. They are going to have to play great football if they want to catch him,” said Coach Roberts.

“I’m just trying to learn everything, trying to process the offense and trying to get better at simple details. The steps, the drop back for passes. I just have to learn the offense,” said Isom.
He’s learning quick and adjusting to his new team fast. He already calls his team members ‘brothers’.
