BATON ROUGE, La. (WGNO) — The Ed Orgeron era comes to a close on a high note Saturday night on the bayou as LSU stunned the No. 14-ranked Texas A&M Aggies (8-4) to close out what has been a disappointing season for the Tigers.
With the win LSU (6-6), who finished the COVID-shortened season last year at 5-5, avoided its first losing season since 1999. In doing so, Coach Orgeron lead the Tigers over a Jimbo Fisher-led Aggies team that shocked then-top ranked Alabama in another SEC West Division battle earlier in the season.
The Aggies trailed the Tigers until Zach Calzada threw his third touchdown of the night – his second to Jalen Preston – with just seven minutes to play. LSU quarterback Max Johnson had been under pressure all night with Texas A&M sacking the sophomore six times – four registered to Michael Clemons.
Down by four with 28 seconds to play, LSU quarterback Max Johnson found wide receiver Jaray Jenkins on a 28-yard touchdown strike for the winning score.
The win makes LSU bowl eligible, but even if the Tigers get an invite, Orgeron said in the post-game press conference he will not coach the team. Instead, LSU offensive line coach Brad Davis will serve as interim coach.
