Tuesday evening, New Orleans police and the city’s Taxi Cab Bureau announced the arrest of a cabbie on kidnapping and rape charges.
They say some of the new, required technology for cabs in the city helped lead to the arrest.
“We used the GPS devices which are located in all the taxi cabs to determine all the cabs that were in the area during the time of the incident. And we brought those individuals in and started to review their video footage, and that’s how we were able to solve the case,” said Malachi Hull of the New Orleans Taxi Cab Bureau.
40-year-old Sohail Kahn is accused of raping a woman who was riding in his cab in the 7600 block of Plum Street.
Last year, the city began requiring cabs to have video cameras and GPS units among other new technologies.
Police say Kahn has a prior conviction stemming from a fight with a customer in Jefferson Parish as well as a solicitation of prostitution charge in New Jersey.
