NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The challenge? Be the New Orleans High School to buy the most Sucre cupcakes. The prize? Sucre cupcakes! Over one thousand of them, enough for the entire student body and faculty.

“After all the hard work that went into this, all the schools that competed, this is the first time we really get to see on their faces truly how much joy a cupcake brings to someone. The cupcake we selected for Dominican was actually their choice, their favorite, was cookies and cream. It’s a beautiful moist chocolate sponge cake, just probably one of my favorite flavors actually,” says Tariq Hanna Executive Pastry Chef and Partner at Sucre New Orleans.

Competition was fierce, but the ladies of St. Mary’s Dominican dominated.

“I am not originally from New Orleans, I had no idea how competitive the high schools were here. So for me, it was a little bit of culture shock but it was absolutely fantastic. I thought I had a lot of pride in the school I went to, down here, you’re all a little nuts,” jokes Hanna.

“We thought it was kind of crazy at first when people, when Dominican was first entered in it we were like ‘what is this, like what are we supposed to do’ and then we kind of like sat down had a meeting and were like this could be really cool if we could pull this off and the student body would love it if we all had cupcakes,” says student body president Rachel Hensley.

Not only did they win the cupcake party, and pretty sweet trophy, a one-thousand dollar check for charity was the icing on top of a sweet victory.

“The Peace Center is our non-profit charity organization founded by three Dominican sisters, it’s right in our own neighborhood, it helps out people in the community and we are donating all of the money to The Peace Center,” says Hensley.

“We were so excited when we saw it on the table, we knew The Peace Center would be so grateful to have it so that was an awesome feeling,” says student body vice president Shea Moreau.
