ALGIERS, La. (WGNO) – As the world watches the aftermath of the United Kingdom’s historic vote to leave the European Union, we’re reminded of a local secession movement that’s been ongoing – and unsuccessful – for years.
Former state Rep. Jeff Arnold made a push for Algiers and West Jefferson Parish to leave New Orleans and Jefferson Parish to form the state’s 65th parish on the West Bank.
He argued that forming its own government would help with crime, blight and other issues he believes are not being adequately addressed by the city of New Orleans or Jefferson Parish.
The measure required approval from the Legislature, and it failed to gain traction there more than once. Although it got support from a few fellow lawmakers, Jefferson and Orleans parish lawmakers largely were against the proposal.
