NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans police department placed an officer under emergency suspension on Sunday.  He’s identified as Thomas Ripp.  According to the department, Ripp crashed his unmarked police cruiser into a cement light pole at about 5:40 Sunday morning.

Police say the crash happened at the intersection of Robert E. Lee Blvd. and Dove Street.  They say Ripp was given a post-accident test that showed he was over the legal limit for alcohol.

After being treated for minor injuries, Ripp was arrested and suspended.

According to the department, he worked most recently in the Homicide Division.
