NEW ORLEANS – NOFD is reporting that a woman was killed in the massive blaze that took nearly an hour and a half to extinguish.

Firefighters received the initial call of a residential fire around 1:00 p.m.

The NOFD responded to 2607 S. Johnson Street, where they discovered heavy black smoke billowing from that address, as well as a duplex located to the immediate left at 2609/2611 S. Johnson St. engulfed in flames.

The first alarm was called at 1:06 p.m., the second at 1:14 p.m. and the third at 1:27 p.m.

All homes were currently being occupied at the time of the fire. The initial fire building at 2607 S. Johnson St. as well as the duplex at 2609/2611 S. Johnson St. are unfortunately a total loss.

Two additional homes located at 3330/3340 Third St. as well as 3412/3414 Third St. received mild to moderate damage as a result of the fire.

One resident, an adult female, was transported to a local area hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.

One resident is currently unaccounted for but confirmed to have escaped the home.


Twenty-one NOFD units carrying fifty-five Fire Operations personnel were used to bring this incident under control at 2:21 p.m.

No firefighter injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
