NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – When you’re a high school kid with designs on designing clothes, you simply sign up for summer camp.
Not just any summer camp. It’s summer fashion camp.
It’s going on this week. It lasts for about 6 hours every day.
The campsite is in the back of New Orleans Ogden Museum of Southern Art.
Nicholas Oubre is there. He says he’s going for more of a street wear kind of look.
“How else would you express yourself other than what you wear, ” he says to WGNO News with a Twist features reporter Wild Bill Wood.
The camp counselor is Veronica Cho. She used to work in New York with designer Tommy Hilfiger.
She knows these kids come in dreaming about the cover of Vogue magazine.
Amanda Viloria has been dreaming since she was 8. That’s when she started sewing.
And what’s the thing she sewed back then? A pillow case.
Wild Bill wonders who’s sleeping on that pillow case now?
“My grandma actually, ” Veronica says proudly to Wild Bill.
The end of fashion camp week is the fashion camp fashion show.
With no money to fly in super models from Paris or New York, the campers have get creative.
You’ll see who’s on the runway when you watch the story.
