NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Our news team was driving by Lee Circle Thursday afternoon and noticed the Robert E. Lee monument had been vandalized by a local tagger. Near the base of the monument, someone wrote the word “COUCH” in orange and black spray paint.

Lee Circle and the Robert E. Lee statue have been at the center of controversy in recent weeks.   Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the City Council have started the process to get Confederate monuments in New Orleans removed.

Landrieu and the City Council will announce more details about upcoming public hearings on this issue.  A final vote is not expected to occur on the issue until at least September 2015.
