HARAHAN, La (WGNO) — Police in Jefferson Parish are searching for a gunman who fired almost a dozen shots at a McDonald’s restaurant Tuesday morning before shooting his way into an Academy Sports and robbing it.

Gunshots were first reported around 2:42 a.m. Tuesday near Jefferson Highway and Causeway Boulevard.

Col. John Fortunato, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office said the front window of a McDonald’s restaurant at 2916 Jefferson Highway was shattered. Detectives on the scene found 11 bullet holes in the McDonald’s.

Around 4:13 a.m., the manager of Academy Sports at 800 South Clearview Parkway reported that she had been robbed at gunpoint. The sports store is about 2 miles away from the McDonald’s.

Fortunato said the gunman fired two shots into the front window of the store which shattered it. The gunman then forced his way to the back offices where he ordered the manager on duty to open the safe. He fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Six workers were inside the Academy Sports during the robbery. No one was injured.

Authorities say the suspect was wearing a black leather jacket, black pants with a white stripe, gloves and a black ski-mask. He used a black semi-automatic handgun in the robbery.

Around 5 a.m. New Orleans police say a man opened fire at a McDonald’s on north Broad after attempting to open the business’ door. Once the glass shattered, the suspect left, said Garry Flot, a spokesman for the NOPD.

Detectives are investigating to determine if the shooting in New Orleans is related to the McDonald’s and Academy Sports shooting in Jefferson Parish.
