COVINGTON, LA (WGNO) – Art students at Covington High School are the best in Louisiana.

They’ve won a contest to design, well, re-design shoes in the Van’s Custom Culture Contest.

Now, they want to win the entire competition for all America.

WGNO News with a Twist features guy Wild Bill Wood takes you to Covington to the school and inside the art class to find out where the creativity comes from.

The Covington High School team’s design was picked to be in the final 50.  The contest started with more than 2,400 submissions.

Here’s how the contest works.  Students got four pairs of Vans shoes, just regular, plain Vans shoes.  They had the challenge to create designs that represent the four themes of Vans.

The themes are action sports, arts, music and local flavor.

This is a contest not just with a big paycheck for the winners, it’s a contest with a purpose.  The idea is to raise awareness of diminishing arts in education.

Anytime there’s a school budget cut, it usually comes from the arts department.

Vans believes students have the right to express themselves, the right to art.
