NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The new University Medical Center will finally open its doors Saturday, August 1.

The 2.3 million square foot facility has nearly 450 beds with 60 of those beds dedicated to a mental health unit.

The medical center is the state’s largest teaching hospital and it will provide primary care, specialty care, and has a trauma center.

The hospital is also expected to bring 3,000 new jobs to New Orleans.

All patients at the interim LSU Hospital will be transferred to University Medical Center (UMC) as part of the grand opening.
