KENNER, La. (WGNO) – Police are investigating a shooting in Kenner which killed a 49-year-old manager of a marine training center. The fatal shooting happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. at Houston Marine located at 2506 Williams Blvd.
Authorities say the suspect, John Spears, was an employee at Houston Marine. Police found him standing at his car in Houston Marine’s parking lot where he surrendered to officers. The 50-year-old from Marrero had unloaded his gun and his pockets.
Jefferson Parish Coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich, has identified the victim as Anthony Tardo of Mandeville. He had worked at Houston Marine for 19-years. Dr. Cvitanovich said Tardo had three young children. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are trying to figure out what happened before the fatal shooting which was one gunshot wound to the chest. Dr. Cvitanovich said there was no known altercation prior to the attack.
Spears reportedly has refused to cooperate with detectives and offered no motive for his actions. He will be charged with the crime of second-degree murder.
Lt. Brian McGregor, who briefed the media on the scene said, Spears told a fellow co-worker that “[Tardo] is gonna need some help” before walking outside after the shooting.
Ten other employees were inside the building. They were not injured.
Spears had worked at Houston Marine for 1-year. As of the writing of this report, his bond had not been set.
