NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)— The New Orleans Police Department began investigating a deadly shooting that happened near a Treme neighborhood Monday morning.
According to NOPD, First District officers responded to a call reporting a man down in the street near the intersection of North Derbigny and Lafitte Avenue around 8 a.m.
Upon arrival, police say they discovered a man who suffered from an undetermined number of gunshot wounds.
The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.
No further information is available at this time.
Neighbors say lately the violence is getting really bad.
“This is going on every other day. Guys with big guns going back and forth and killings. Get these guys with guns off the streets,” a neighbor said.
The shooting happened just right off the Lafitte Greenway which plenty of people use daily to walk or bike.
“We need some kind of patrol. We used to have security back here. Now they don’t roam or drive around here anymore. I’m aggravated. This has to stop. It really has to stop,” a neighbor said.
The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of death and release the victims’ names upon completion of autopsy and notification of families.
