HOUMA, La. (WGNO) – A Houma woman was arrested Tuesday night after her 2-year-old child was found walking alone at an intersection.

According to Houma Police, officers responded just before 6 p.m. to a child walking along at the corner of Canal and Academy streets.

Police said it took more than two hours to find the child’s mother, 32-year-old Netta Verdin of Houma.

Verdin never tried to notify authorities about her missing child, police said. Police said Verdin was sleeping and never knew the child had left home.

Officers said Verdin smoked marijuana before going to bed.

She was arrested on charges of child desertion and possession of marijuana.
