THIBODAUX, La. (WGNO) – The Thibodaux Police Department  has arrested 27-year-old Yonni Matthews of Bridge City and charged him with negligent homicide in the death of his 5-year-old son.

Detectives say that on October 4th Matthews was driving his 2014 Hyundai Elantra  when he crashed into the back of a Honda Pilot and another vehicle.

Matthews, his son and the passengers in the other vehicles were all taken to the hospital.

Matthews’s son died from his injuries at the hospital.

Police say that they recovered illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia inside of Matthews’ car.

Blood was drawn from Matthews at the hospital. A Toxicology report is still pending.

Matthews is currently charged with negligent homicide, 5 counts of vehicular negligent injury, reckless operation  of a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana, operating a vehicle with a suspended license and a child passenger restraint violation.

He is currently being held in the Lafourche Parish Jail on a $164,750 bond.

More charges are possible.
