The brother of a man who testified in the high-profile Telly Hankton murder case was killed Saturday night, outside of the same daiquiri shop where Hankton gunned down Darnell Stewart in 2008.
Police say Curtis Matthews, 61, who was shot dead at about 10:45 p.m. in the 3400 block of South Claiborne Avenue, is the brother of John Matthews, who testified at a recent trial to seeing Hankton kill Stewart near the Jazz Daiquiri Lounge back in 2008.
Hankton was convicted of Stewart’s murder and sentenced last Wednesday to life in prison.
Neither the New Orleans Police Department nor the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office would comment on Matthews’ murder or speculate whether it was in retaliation for his brother’s testimony. No arrests have been made in this case.
