NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Late Sunday afternoon, a little boy was pulled from Lake Pontchartrain in the Seabrook area. Police say he was holding the hand of his aunt and trying to go into deeper water. At that point, police say, the five-year-old’s hand slipped away from his aunt and the boy went under the deeper water. When he was found, sources tell WGNO News, the boy received CPR at the scene and was transported to the hospital where he died.
The boy’s death is the second of the weekend in the same area of the lake. Saturday afternoon, a seven-year-old girl was swimming with friends when she began to struggle in the water. Once taken to shore, the girl was unresponsive. She died at the hospital.
According to police, both children were swimming in the lake along the 5400 block of Lakeshore Drive. That’s by the Seabrook boat launch. Swimming is allowed in the area, but there are signs posted — in both English and Spanish — warning people that no lifeguards are on duty.
