NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) –We continue our series, “Living Among the Dead,” with the ghost of a woman who dances on a downtown roof.
Julie is one of the most famous ghosts in New Orleans and she can be found dancing on the rooftops of the 700 block of Royal Street, near the famous Blue Dog Gallery. This is where she died in the 1800s.
Legend has it that Julie was an “octoroon” meaning that she was 1/8 black. Julie fell in love with a rich Frenchman, but because of their biracial relationship, he could not marry her. One night, the Frenchman was having a party at the house, and he told Julie that if she were to strip down and wait for him on the roof, they could marry the next day. He said this in jest, but Julie wanted to prove her undying love for him.
Julie waited for her lover all night in the cold, damp December air. When the Frenchman finally made his way upstairs, he realized that she had taken the request seriously. He went out on to the roof and found her naked, frozen body in a corner. It is said that Julie has never left the residence, appearing inside, on the balcony and on the roof. Some of those who see her say she is naked, while some see her in a wedding dress.
