Artist uses Abita beer caps as inspiration for one-of-a-kind pieces of art

MANDEVILLE, La. (WGNO) – It takes a lot of beer to get to this point. Hundreds of thousands of arranged and assorted bottle caps.

“I have a lot of bottle caps at home, so I was like I can put these to good use and do something creative with it,” says Ian Vandenberg, a local artist with Pelican Capworks.

And what may have started out as a beer obsession, has since then turned into beer cap art. The inspiration for these pieces started at the Abita Brewing Company.

But artist Ian Vandenberg doesn’t operate alone his wife Dorothy head’s up the social media side of the business and their son Evan is learning the trade too.

Ian’s art comes in all shapes and sizes, and prices range from one hundred dollars to one thousand depending on the piece and its complexity.

Although Pelican Capworks main headquarters is the kitchen and dining room at this point…

“We figure it out. We move things around a lot, we eat around it, we cook around it,” says Ian’s wife Dorothy Vandenberg.

The Vandenbergs are hopeful, their New Orleans-inspired creations will one day be their primary source of income.

But until then one thing is sure. Beer will be consumed in the Vandenberg household and bottle tops will be collected.
