NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)–If you were thinking about making a few extra bucks this Carnival season by putting your apartment on Airbnb–the city of New Orleans wants to remind you that it’s illegal.

But with thousands of listings already on the popular app, it may be too late to stop it.

Mayor Landrieu’s administration issued a new study on the popular short-term rental trend Tuesday.  To read the report for yourself, click here.

The mayor’s office admits that the city has had trouble proving that property owners are violating the law as it’s currently written, and has offered recommendations for operating rules if the city council decides to make licenses available to property owners who wish to rent on a short-term basis.

The study and recommendations will be given to New Orleans City Council by Feb. 1, 2016.
