(CNN) — North Carolina’s tally of people who have died as a result of Hurricane Matthew is at 14, an increase of three, Gov. Pat McCrory said Tuesday morning. That brings CNN’s count of US deaths relating to Matthew to 24. Three people are reported missing — two in Cumberland County and one in Johnston County, he said. There are about 282,000 power outages in the state — down from about 500,000 the day before — mostly in eastern North Carolina, he said.
Periods of heavy rain produced record-breaking flooding in parts of eastern North Carolina, according to the National Hurricane Center, resulting in life-threatening flooding and flash flooding across the area.
In Haiti, officials estimate over 1,000 fatalities caused by Matthew.
