UPDATE: In a city known for its jazz, food and streetcars of course, New Orleans is also known for St. Charles Avenue, as it made the list of ‘Main Streets Across America,’ put together by the ‘National Life Group.’
The group based its pick on ‘streets located at the heart of their communities where people come together to live, work and play.’
”It’s just really nice, there’s so much history in it and just the greenery everywhere, it’s beautiful and just relaxing and really charming,” says tourist Amber Poon.
The St. Charles streetcar runs from Canal Street, passes through the CBD and the Garden District, then heads all the way Uptown all while boasting beautiful homes on the famed Mardi Gras parade route.
The St. Charles line is also the world`s oldest continuously operating streetcar route.
“I love the streetcar, it’s like a hop on hop off kind of thing. So if I see something and the stop is coming up I just hop off and, I can snap a few pictures and the next one comes in a few minutes,” says tourist Thomas Poon.
And if that`s not reason enough to check out St. Charles Avenue, popular shops, restaurants and bars boast that Big Easy lifestyle year round.
WGNO — Saint Charles Avenue is on a 2016 list of “Main Streets Across America.”
The list was put together by the National Life Group which based its pick on “streets located at the heart of their communities where people come together to live, work and play.”
In all, there are 51 streets on the list, one for each state and the District of Columbia.
Below is a quote from the list that explains the selection of Saint Charles Avenue.
“From downriver to Uptown, St. Charles Avenue is famed in New Orleans lore, in American culture — even in urban transportation. Following the curve of the nearby Mississippi River, the avenue is the pathway for the distinctive green cars of the St. Charles Streetcar Line, the world’s oldest continuously operating streetcar route. The line has been running since 1835, which is about how long this avenue has been a colorful corridor through the heart of America’s most unique and musical city.”
The list’s authors say that the Main Street mindset embraces a strong sense of community and shared neighborly values.
If you’re interested in other streets that made the list, Broad Street in Gadsden is representing Alabama, Main Street in Columbus is representing Mississippi, and Denton’s Downtown Square is representing Texas.
