MADISONVILLE, La. (WGNO) – A north shore community honored former Saint and WWL radio announcer Hokie Gajan Wednesday with a balloon launch at “Hook’d Up” in Madisonville.

“I don’t want tears; I want tears of joy if anything. He was a good man,” says Danielle Rodrigue.

Hundreds of black and gold balloons filled the sky as the community looked back and remembered Gajan and his accomplishments.

Gajan was a running back in the NFL and was drafted out of LSU by the Saints in 1981. He retired from his football career in 1987. Gajan then worked as a scout for the Saints before becoming a radio announcer.

“Hokie is the person regular guys watching football think about when we think about the Saints and Saints football,” says Kevin Bucknam.

Friends and family say he will be greatly missed.

“The world is a lesser place without Hokie, but he left a legacy for sure,” says Jennifer Dephillips.
