COVINGTON, La. (WGNO) – Helen Stewart is just one of several lucky recipients in the Covington community Tuesday. The chief of police himself chose Helen for being a Good Samaritan year round.
On Monday, with help from the P.D., Helen delivered more than 100 gifts to children who might otherwise have gone without this Christmas. But her giving doesn’t stop there and it shows.
“I got several lists. I can go down that list and find somebody to give this to,” says Good Samaritan and cash recipient Helen Stewart.
Plus, Helen isn’t planning to use the money for herself.
She says there are several people in need in the community and tells WGNO she likes to give back because it’s in her heart to do so.
She says her mother taught her to be thankful for what she has and says people have helped her in the past, too.
And Christmas is coming.
“This is the time of the year that we really need to be thankful for our blessings and pass it on,” says Stewart.
“We spend a lot of time in the community trying to build our relationship, especially with the kids because at the end of the day I want them to run to a policeman and a police car, not away from them,” says Covington Chief of Police Tim Lentz.
Seven anonymous donors contributed $6500 to the Covington P.D. this year.
Chief Lentz says Tuesday’s Secret Santa giveaway wouldn’t have been possible without the community’s involvement.
He says the donor’s anonymity speaks volumes for their character and he thanks them from the bottom of his heart.
